by John Durman, PMP, president of PMI Central Iowa Chapter

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving last week. Including that turkey I enjoyed last week, I have a lot to be thankful for, like the strong board of directors I worked with this year. Please join me in thanking them for their service and direction.

We also have a few new board members joining us, including:

  • Katie Dietz, CAPM, vice president of treasury and finance
  • Craig Hinson, PMP, president-elect
  • Brent Humphries, PMP, vice president of communications and marketing
  • Brian Sardou, vice president of professional development

And, of course, Candi Banghart will take over the reins as president in the new year.

As I look back on the year, we’ve accomplished a lot as a chapter, including joining the 500 Club in our Guest Pass program and developing a brief video about our chapter.

PMI - Central Iowa Chapter is one of the best kept secrets. This 25th anniversary video is good representation of the value we provide. Many of the folks interviewed in the three-minute video are members themselves, so see if you recognize someone you know. Please feel free to share it with your peers!

Finally, I hope you enjoy the upcoming holidays with family and friends. It’s been a pleasure serving as your president – although I’m not going too far as past-president – and I’ll see you members at the upcoming year-end meeting and trivia night on Dec. 14!

From Oct. 25 – 28, the annual Leadership Institute in Chicago offered professional development opportunities for chapter leaders and global volunteers. Seven people attended from our chapter, including myself, Candi Banghart, John Durman, Brent Humphries, Brian Naaden, Lynn Reed, and Stephen Rodriguez.

The Difference Makers theme was fitting, as I had some key take-aways:

  • One hour of effective planning saves 200 errors in execution!
  • Research & Development (R&D) should be called 'rip-off & duplicate'
  • PMI's 2018 strategy = “Deliver value, do GREAT things, and grow!”
  • PMI's 2018 aspiration = “Empower people to make ideas a reality.”
  • General guidance in life: “Don't seek perfection. Seek balance. Seek consistency. Seek justice. Seek passion. Seek a cause for humanity, and your life shall have meaning.” - Derreck Kayongo

The next Leadership Institute meeting will be Oct. 4-6, 2018, in Los Angeles.

by Lynn Reed, program manager of Collaborate to Succeed

From Oct. 28 – 31, 2017, more than 3,000 project managers from around the world attended the North Americas Global Conference in Chicago. Where else can you run into that many project managers? I talked to many of my peers about the alternative titles and hats we wear. There are so many different industries this conference applies to – Agile, Waterfall, Six Sigma, and so on. The sessions are all presented by our peers, including a project manager from NASA, which was out of this world!  (See what I did there?)

My favorite part was seeing people I only see at this conference. In addition, I got to meet Jack Synder, the first president of PMI. An early photo of him popped up in one of the sessions, and he leaned over to me and said he doesn’t look that young anymore. Ha!

The 2018 global conference will be in early October in Los Angeles. Every session had a nugget of wisdom that applied to me personally and/or professionally. I highly recommended going, not only for the fantastic location, but for the amazing content.

500 Club Central Iowa 2017

The PMI organization has realized significant growth and popularity over the past 10 years, and is nearing 500,000 memberships and 283 chapters worldwide. For members who have joined PMI Global – but not a local chapter – the Guest Pass program provides a free local membership as an incentive to try a local chapter. Local chapters receive reimbursement up to $500 annually for the revenue associated with these memberships. If a local chapter reaches this threshold, it is awarded the distinction and recognition by being declared a 500 Club.

And I’m proud to announce that PMI – Central Iowa Chapter is now part of the 500 Club! So far this year, more than 20 new chapter members have joined using this program. We welcome our new members to attend a chapter meeting to network and learn about the local chapter resources, opportunities, and fun that exists with the PMI - Central Iowa Chapter!
