Background

  • The PMI Project Management Job Growth and Talent Gap Report of 2017 projects the United States to grow 200,000 project management-oriented positions each year through 2027.
  • The US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 278,000 veterans are unemployed in October 2017.

Mission & Vision

  • Mission: The mission of the Mil2PM program is to fill the project management talent gap with project-experienced veterans; giving back to those who are willing to sacrifice it all for our freedom.
  • Vision: Certify or place 100 military PMs in 10 years (by 2027).
    • Certification is a win for current military members.
    • Placement is a win for former military members/veterans.

Method & Activities

  • The program focuses on refining the project talents of veterans and current military members, educating organizations on the value and relevance of military experience, and connecting the two groups to create a win-win solution.
  • The program includes a combination of self-development and certification preparation resources, workshops, mentorship, employer awareness events, and networking opportunities.

Program Support

We are seeking people willing to support this program in various ways:

  • Recruiters and hiring managers for resume reviews and mock interviews.
  • Mentors with or without military backgrounds to help introduce candidates to various industries and coach them through placement, qualification for testing, and exam preparation.
  • Advocates to raise awareness with employers, through individual and small group meetings and presentations.
  • Partnerships with employers to help place veterans in PM roles.
  • Partnerships with other military/veteran organizations:
    • Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
    • Citizen Soldiers for Life (CSFL) – a transition assistance program
    • Enlisted Association of the National Guard of Iowa (EANGI)
    • Iowa National Guard Officers Association (INGOA)

Successes

  • Allen Dahl – Command Sergeant Major (Retired), Iowa Army National Guard; passed the PMI audit and the PMP exam, hired at Wells Fargo
